What causes ankle pain?

"Because my Jacstrap ankle support could be applied where it was needed most, I was able to resume training sooner than I had expected."
Rick Osman, runner

Ankle sprains are one of the most common sporting injuries. They are often the result of muscle weakness or previous injuries of the ankle and so preventative measures, such as wearing ankle supports, can be very effective in reducing their frequency. For all ankle injuries, Jacstrap supports should be used in conjunction with medical advice.

Typically an injury occurs when the ankle is twisted which can cause a ligament to tear on one or both sides of the ankle. Swelling and bruising normally accompany ankle injuries and their extent is often a good indicator of severity.

Other causes of ankle pain include nerve compression at the ankle as the nerve passes under the supportive band surrounding the ankle, the flexor retinaculum. This is similar to Carpal Tunnel syndrome of the hand and is the result of injury, overuse or possibly varicose veins. Sometimes the feeling is a tingling or numbness in the arch or toes.
